How to choose a Diamond?

As I have mentioned in my previous blog-

Apart from these the other characteristics that should be considered for diamonds are:

  • The best diamond is unheated, untreated and naturally occurring which gives the best astrological benefits to the native.

  • The colour of the diamond is colourless or near colourless. The diamonds having yellow tint to it are of no use in Vedic astrology. Colour grades D, E, F are colourless while G and H are near colourless. These are the varieties which are recommended.

  • Practically 100% inclusion-free diamond is nonexistent. Some inclusions are expected but should be very less for it to be the original one. You know the more inclusions, the lesser transparency and lesser the price. Clarity of the diamond s of very importance. Grades of VS1 or better is recommended. This indicates that with a 10x power loupe also, there should be much difficulty for the observer to locate even the minor inclusions in it. The shape can be Round, Emerald Cut, Princess Cut, Radiant Cut or Oval.

  • It should have a considerable amount of solidity and hardness. The MOHS scale of hardness for a diamond is 10 i.e the hardest mineral. Its is a Mineral composes of carbon. Each carbon atom in a diamond is surrounded by four other carbon atoms and connected to them by strong covalent bonds. It is chemically resistant and has the highest thermal conductivity of any natural material.

  • Its refractive index is 2.417.

  • Its specific gravity is 3.516-3.525.

  • The best quality diamonds come from Russia, Botswana, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Australia and Canada. In India, Mumbai and Surat deal in best quality diamonds.

  • The average density is 3.52

  • Birefringence is 0.007- 0.010.

  • It should be at least 0.30 carats and above in weight so as to give prominent results. In general, 0.30-1.00 carat is ideal for astrological purpose.

  • There should be uniformity of colour and transparency in the entire stone.

  • Should be devoid of any impurity, cracks, lines, blemishes and bubbles.

  • Its lustre and radiance should be appreciated from the naked eye.

  • Should be of required heaviness which marks its difference from the fake stone.

  • How to identify an original Diamond?

    • Apart from the above-mention characteristics, one can check if given stone leaves colour or has residues on rubbing it.
    • Only microscopic natural inclusions will be there in original Diamond and that would be very very less if any. The gas bubbles, scratches, cuts, blemishes, etc are seen in fake stones.
    • Try to scratch the stone from a key or hard material. Original stone won't get scratched as it is the hardest substance out there. If the given stone gets scratched easily then it's probably the fake one.
    • The Water Test: A real diamond has a high density. So if it floats at the surface of the water or underneath in a beaker or a glass, it is probably a fake stone. A real diamond would sit at the bottom of the glass or a beaker due to high density.
    • If you are getting the diamond at a cheaper price, then it is 99% fake as natural and original ones are expensive. While the synthetic diamond comes in 20% the lesser price, the fake one can be bought for 90-95% cheaper than the original one. So beware!
    • Diamonds quality depends on the 4C's i.e. Colour, Clarity, Cut and Carat weight. Diamonds which are bought by the experienced diamond graders are to be trusted than any other cheaper version.
    • Last but not the Least, Seek professional help when in doubt and buy certified stones always.
